Main monuments and attractions The Royal Residences (declared "national heritage" by UNESCO) :
Piazza Castello is lined with porticoes and is the real heart of the city : here and hereabouts stand the great buildings that have witnessed the development of the city, from the ancient Roman era to our days. The historical centre is sprinkled with churches : some erected as a testament to a miracle, such as that of Corpus Domini, and others are true masterpieces of architecture. The Basilica of Maria Ausiliatrice. The Basilica of Superga was built to fulfil a vow made to the Virgin Mary - to whom a chapel is dedicated on the hill - by the Duke on the eve of his victory over the French, who were besieging the city, on september 1706. In the cript, it is possible to visit part of Savoy dinasty tombs. The Sanctuary of the Consolata is both a masterpiece of architecture and a testament to centuries of popular devotion to the cult of Mary the Comforter as evidenced by the wealth of new and old ex-voto paintings. The Holy Shroud, a mystery of Christianity which has been preserved for two thousand years, has been kept in Turin Cathedral since 14 September 1578.
