Architecture

Turin's architecture is known mainly for its Baroque style, with the sumptuous royal residences, the imposing domes of the churches, the palaces which, from the XVIIIth century, transformed it into a capital of the European Baroque.

Guarino Guarini, Filippo Juvarra, Ascanio Vitozzi etc.… All the best architects of the time worked in Turin !

Turin is also the Italian capital of the liberty style. The flowers, scrolls and "bow windows" enrich the fine structures built between the XIXth century and the beginning of the XXth century, in numerous areas of the city.


Museums

There are about 50 museums in the town to satisfy the cultural and artistic passions and curiosities of everyone, including :

  • the Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna (Town Gallery of Modern Art) : in addition to permanent collections, with the works of Chagall, Mogliani and Picasso, temporary exhibitions of great interest are also presented ;
  • the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, Castello di Rivoli (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art), one of the most significant on a national level ;
  • the Museo Egizio (Egyptian Museum), the most significant in the world, after that of Cairo : more than 30,000 items to tell 5000 years of history through art, religion and daily life at the time of the Pharaohs, and the statue of Ramses II ;
  • the Galleria Sabauda contains the works of Piedmont artists, the masters of Tuscan and Venetian painting along with precious Flemish and Dutch painters ;
  • the Museum of Decorative Arts houses furniture from the XVIIIth century, frames, miniatures, sculptures, porcelain, tapestries, fine glassware and carpets of great artistic and historical value ;
  • the Museo dell'Automobile "Carlo Biscaretti di Ruffia" (Automotive Museum) : the 160 cars on display document the history of locomotion from the XXth century through to the present day ;
  • the Museo della Sindone (Museum of the Holy Shroud) contains extremely interesting artefacts and documents, along with the results of scientific research carried out on canvas ;
  • the Museo Gallerie Sotterranee Pietro Micca, where you can admire costumes or miniature models, or take a trip through the underground galleries of the time ;
  • the Museo della Marionetta (Puppetry Museum) holds more than 5000 puppets, ornaments and items of scenery ;
  • the Armeria Reale (Royal Armoury) with its weapons, suits of armour, instruments of warfare and flags ;
  • the Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento (National Museum of the Italian Risorgimento) ;
  • the National Cinema Museum (Mole Antonelliana) ;
  • the Museo di Arte Antica, Palazzo Madama (Civic Ancient Art Museum) ;
  • etc.


Music

  • The Teatro Regio, a temple of lyrics,
  • the Carignano Theatre, XVIIIth century structures, three lines of lodges and a triumph of gilded stucco etc.,
  • the Lingotto Auditorium…

An opera house, three auditoriums and twelve theatres. Concerts and live music every night: Turin is a city that loves music in all its forms.
