Geneva offers a large variety of shows. Its agenda of festivals and cultural events alternates theatre, dance, classical and contemporary music, jazz, and even open-air cinema on the lakeside. Every summer, classical music concerts are held in the courtyard of the Town Hall, while jazz and brass bands perform in the parks and along the lake. In summer there are four popular festivities :
No doubt one of the most popular local events is L'Escalade commemorating the Duke of Savoy's failed attempt to seize the town by surprise the night of December 11-12, 1602. Every year around that time, the Escalade is celebrated to remind the people of Geneva of this historic occasion. People dressed in historical costumes proceed through the streets of the town and an evening torch-light parade is held. Children disguise themselves and go to cafés singing Escalade songs. All the confiseries in town sell the marmite d'Escalade, a small pot made of chocolate or nougat and filled with marzipan vegetables. These pots commemorate a certain Mère Royaume who killed an invader by pouring the boiling contents of her soup pot over him from her window. The fairs and trade shows represent further attractions throughout the year with the Automobile Show, the Inventions and New Techniques Fair, the International Book and Press Fair and the International Luxury Watch Exhibition, etc. |
