Geneva offers a particularly rich artistic and cultural life. Concerts, all kinds of shows and exhibitions of the highest quality take place throughout the year. Geneva is proud of its conservatories of music and its opera where an impressive number of famous artists have appeared. It can also boast a very active and diverse theatre scene with about 35 stages (list of Geneva's main Theatres). Geneva has some fourty museums, including the Museum of Art and History and its branches (The Museum of Watchmaking, the History of Science Museum, Maison Tavel, Ariana, the Rath Museum, etc.), as well as the Ethnographical Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Voltaire Institute and Museum, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMCO), the International Museum of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, the Botanical Conservatory and Garden, among others. Together with the private galleries, they house some prestigious collections, which bear witness to the creativity and cultural influence of Geneva. 50 cinemas can be found in the city (2003 figures). Geneva offers more than 120'000 square meters of
exhibition space, whith rooms able to accommodate from 20 to
6'500 persons.
